yeah sci people say both. some say nissan arent reliable and suck gas, some say nissans a great with reliability and yes they still admit they suck quite a bit of fuel but i guess they prefer spend on gas than always in garage. but check this out, wha u think bout people outlook on turbo diesel? ask them bus drivers, ohhh them thing not good. i had to explain to a couple of them why them 3.0 turbo buses and them others like it were failing here. them fellers aint know how to maintain a turbo diesel because 1. its something different to them when coming from an n/a diesel engine all their life and starting to run a turbo charged diesel engine. they like the power but forget there is a price to pay for it. 2. they lack the basic knowledge of the turbo engine maintenance and still think its some magical force that aint need to be checked..
so i explained a few things. told em that turbo charged vehicles work hotter, work the oil harder, use more oil than usual, and need to be cooled properly to avoid frying the oil fast and working inefficiently. explained why the vehicle needs to idle for a minute or two before shutting down. and what happens to the oil in the turbine when they run hard and just shut off the engine. i think alot of times its people who dont really know whats going on under the hood, thats what makes them draw certain conclusions. but hey sucking gas and unreliability, dont need a diploma to know that it sucks. lol

yeah and Australians swimming in them. i believe, when a diesel turbo dont have an oil cooler or even when they make em with the direct air intake and no intercooler u gonna have high temperature probs. even the gear ratios dont indicate that they made them 3.0 turbo buses to do lots of inclines like we got in dominica. the gearboxes lash alot and the ratios seem a bit far from eachother. could be the differential though. anyway i asked a bus driver what he thinks bout the prado and the bus which spot the same type of 3.0 turbo, one intercooled and one not. he said they did a swap once and the prado's engine is just way more reliable. so it stands to reason that these modifications of 1kz were done to suit the type of vehicle. a prado is an SUV and a hiace is a commuter or shuttle vehicle. not intended for serious off roading or difficult terrain/inclines. just check out the rear suspension as opposed to the older hiace.

The problem with the turbo diesel toyota in d.ca is something I can't discuss to openly. However even with those with turbo timer they still fail. Diesel on a whole needs to be serviced on time or else it will gel up the oil. Tuning efi diesel turbo is the opposite of tuning gasoline vehicles.
This topic wasn't for that discussion but while we at it I would just say that the buses are efi, usual failure is loss of compression and failed rings. Those of you who have engine knowledge can do use ur own reasoning. I can't talk too much about it cause I am working on something to do with that

yah i heard of that plus the layout of the water jacket that causes uneven cooling in the block and then yah know, bends the metal outta shape, then comes the loss of compression and fried onion rings. what a bummer, anyway back on topic.
