I say visit Uncle SKEWO & tell him "GIVE THE YOUNG MAN A CHANCE" & based on his response hit him with his slogan for 2009 election, I can't remember it did not stick.

But seriously that would be nice if the young enthusiast in Dominica had a secure structure capable to entertain their automotive interest, within which set rules and guidelines may groom thier adrenaline rush, this will differ them from exploring on the streets. i see the canefield airport as an opportune location to house such activities as seen in florida and few other municipalities by allowing the youths to exlore in a secure evironment it reduces the chances of them being hurt or hurting others on the street.

Former street racers flock to old airport site to satisfy need for speed

Clouds of smoke from the burning rubber rose from the slab of concrete after the two cars launched from the starting line and roared down the former runway and into the darkness. Two more cars began creeping toward the starting line. "Hey guys, get your cameras ready. You might want to see this," announcer Frank Rodriguez said to the crowd in the bleachers as a sleek, black Ford Mustang jerked forward like a nervous racehorse balking at getting into the gate.

As the Mustang settles back down and inches into position, a small jet of vapor shoots up from a vent just in front of the windshield as the driver primes the nitrous oxide system that will add 150 more horsepower to the engine. It's another race night at Countyline Dragway, a one-eighth-mile drag strip just south of the county line where Miami-Dade meets Broward, among the rock pits that line Okeechobee Road near the intersection with Krome Avenue.

Before Countyline was established at the old Opa-locka West Airport in January, scenes like these were taking place on Okeechobee Road, also known as U.S. 27, and other straight, long remote highways in South Florida where owners of pumped-up cars would meet to race. The only legal places to race were Moroso Motor Sports Park in northern Palm Beach County and Immokalee Regional Raceway in Collier County. Former street racers are flocking to Countyline Dragway, and it has helped cut down on complaints about street racing, especially in Miramar, whose jurisdiction includes a long section of Okeechobee Road just north of the drag strip. "A year ago we were getting a lot of complaints," said Bill Robertson, public information officer for Miramar Police. "I've spoken to our commanders, and they say they haven't had complaints in quite a while, and that's a good thing." Police aren't the only ones who know a good thing. "We needed this place," said Glenn Parvin, 29, of Boca Raton. "It's safer for us and the public. You don't have to worry about some lady pulling in front of you in her SUV, and she doesn't have to worry about you. And a cop won't be writing you a ticket."

Eclectic is the rule at the old airport on a race night. The vehicles come in every variety, from one labeled "El Yugo" and scaled-down versions of traditional dragsters, to motorcycles and four-wheel all-terrain vehicles. The drivers are also a broad mix, with every shade of skin color and age represented, from teens to gray-haired seniors. On this Saturday night, 130 vehicles have signed up to race, and there are about 1,000 spectators on hand. "Our mind-set has always been we want to get kids off the street," said Pete Scalzo, who presented plans for the drag strip when Miami-Dade County decided to shut down the airport. Scalzo leases the property, and a portion of the profits goes back to the county. Scalzo, who recently sold the motocross course he had started on Krome Avenue, has been into fast cars most of his life and was concerned about the illegal drag racing that was going on in South Florida. Scazlo said he knew the airport would be a perfect spot for a drag strip, so he made a presentation to the Miami-Dade County Commission in November, shortly after the commission decided to close down the airport. One of the two landing strips is used for parking, and the other is for racing. Scalzo pays for insurance, electric generators, portable toilets and an ambulance, and he made a few renovations before opening. But nothing is permanent since the county may turn the property into a rock pit. "We'll be here as long as they let us stay," Scalzo said. Nicole Hobales is getting ready for her third run of the night. The 19-year-old from Miami stands out for two reasons: She is a female in a sea of testosterone, and she is driving a little front-wheel drive Honda CRX with no front bumper that is dwarfed by the muscle cars around it. "I've seen a difference on the street," Hobales said about the reduction in illegal racing since the dragway opened. Hobales, who does all the work on her car, said her Honda has gotten up to 63 mph on the strip, not bad considering there are only 660 feet of track before the finish line.

It's been fast enough to win a couple of races in the months since she has been at the track. "Those guys weren't happy," Hobales said of her losing opponents. Before the dragway opened, Hobales said there weren't many places to test her work. "Parking lots, and a lot of people would race on the street. I tried to stay out of that," Hobales said. Hobales said she likes the competition and the chance to see if her work under the hood translates into quicker times on the track. "I have this car to work on so I won't ruin my real one," Hobales said.

Racers pay $20 for the night and sign a waiver. Once their vehicle passes an inspection, they can take as many runs as they want. After each one they receive a time sheet showing their top speed and overall time. For Enrique Sorvill, the dragway is a short drive from his home in Dania Beach, and it gives him a chance to see if the $7,000 he has been pouring into his 2002 black Camaro has translated into a faster car. "This is what we needed. Everyone is coming here to race. You don't see everyone on [U.S.] 27 anymore," said Sorvill, 39.

Like many racers, Sorvill added a $2,000 nitrous oxide unit to his car's engine. Sorvill said his Camaro now generates 500 horsepower. "That really makes you go," Sorvill said. But Willie Walden shakes his head when asked if his Monte Carlo is juiced with nitrous. "I don't believe in that stuff," said Walden, 31, of Coconut Creek, who likened it to steroid use in baseball. "I'm old school. I try and get all my stuff from the motor." Walden does like the track and has already made two runs, but he complains his tires aren't hooking, meaning they weren't getting traction. But Walden is not done. He'll line up to race again, and again. "It's like a drug," said Robert Thomas, 45, of Coconut Creek, a friend of Walden's and a fellow racer. Thomas uses nitrous oxide in his Monte Carlo. "You just keep trying to find ways to go faster. You get that good run, and it feels great and makes it worthwhile."

I spoke to the head of DASPA about this and he has indicated to me that he is in favour of hosting motorsports at that venue. He is even thinking of hosting multiple events during any given year. I am not sure how organised the effort is but I think a meeting should be convened to discuss the matter seriously. It may involve getting the green light from the civil aviation authority.
