XP for my field of work.. is undoubtedly the best. 
..... not to mention guaranteed compatibility with stand alone systems .. years of fixes and developed software.. can't go wrong.... Now if your talking outside of Microsoft.. I understand... BUT please don't tell me you talking bout Vista...
