Hi all,
Well I managed to attend this last event to help my son with his Red 200SX which he had seriously upgraded the engine having spent several weeks in Antigua prior to the event to do so.
I got there on Thursday night and first thing in the morning we trailered the car to the Dyno to have a new Haltech E8 ECU installed and tuned.
This required that we install a second paired Walboro fuel pump to ensure that the 740 cc injectors would be able to deliver enough fuel for 25 plus pounds of boost.
After some wiring gremlins were sorted and several trips to hardware and plumbing stores for fittings etc., the engine was ready to go. The tuner loaded a base map and the engine started easily enough and the tuning got underway. First static timing was set and then with the car on the dyno things started getting interesting. With boost left to the wastegate spring 18 pounds was the oder of the day and after several runs the engine maxed out at 403 HP. With increasing boost the power rose to 464 at 28 pounds but we had run out of injector duty cycle which was 99% at that time. To be safe the boost was dropped to 25 LB's and the HP was 450 with consecutive runs. Duty cycle was 92% so in order to get more power we will have to go to larger injectors but this is fine for the time being.
The new power showed its ugly head when a poor launch on Saturday after whilst trying to time the car for the 11 second bracket resulted in a sheared gearbox output shaft. With our hopes crushed the Antiguans came to the rescue in the form of the Sampson Twins who have a nearly identical 200sx but are running a Jericho clutchless gearbox and so had the old box as surplus to requirements. A quick deal was made and the gearbox was ours and was installed the next morning after a bitch load of trouble which saw us having to jack the engine up and forward to get enough clearance to get the gearbox back on.
My son was not sure how to launch the car as we didn't want to break this gearbox so we opted to qualify for the 13 second class which was easily accomplished. However when he launched in his first race he got off the line incredibly well and blew down the track until he realized that he would Breakout (go under the 13 sec bracket) so tried to slow down from about the 1000' mark. Unfortunately he timed in at 11.8 with a 108 mph trap speed and so was disqualified. He ran a few grudge races and managed another 11.9 sec pass. All in all we were very pleased with the car and his driving and we are confident that when we get the car back to St. Lucia and setup for the Caca Beth, a high 10 second pass should be within reach.
Here is a Photobucket link to a bunch of pictures I took during the three days I was there.
