Re: Project JZA80
I've heard that about vvti supras...tuning gets problematic just because you have another system to deal with. Actually wit hondas i keep hearing that if you want an easier engine to boost, go for a non-VTEC engine. Makes sense, although lots of tuners still choose to put turbos on VTEC powerplants - guess they're like you...if it's easy, why do it.
Overall tuners look for different criteria when they say a car is good eh. The supra is a prime example of that. Yes it was a good car, but not a great car for what it was marketed as. Now you can't keep them in the warehouse because 18-25 year old guys with disposable cash and plenty time on their hands snatchin them up black is white.

Well Damian them supras hot up here man, Majority of the turbo ones sell for the same price or even more than toyota was selling them in 93-98. I've not seen such a young car go for that kind of money yet. (sense an argument coming)
I think it is the best tuner car yet. Toyota & Yamaha collaboration, with an engine strong enough to rev high and do high hp right out of the box. I didn't even bother to take into consideration any of the other cars mentioned in previous post. Hands down the supra is the king. Dominating the the outlaw drag racing class! 2j powered monsters not anything else.

Well...the honda....Non vtec engines were more boost friendly because of lower compression, aka Lower detonation threshold. The problem with the VVTi is the COST of parts. I mean only one company offers cams off the shelf right now on the market..HKS. and its an arm and a leg for just ONE cam.
Engine management...Well in EUROPE and the UK where these engines came in domestic market cars ie UK spec supras etc, and the availability of HKS pro dealers, you found some rather great examples of built VVTi supras. besides the head and intake manifold there is basically NO difference between the two engines. Everything else works. You can even decide to just disable the vvti and go with a just about any Aftermarket ECU on the market or better yet use the Power Enterprises Camcon to control vvti.
Tuners choose Supras based on their GOALS....i mean GSC has one of the best examples of an all around supra i have seen.
Road Race setup/Fast Street Car
Power 760WHP
Weight 3220
Runs in One Lap of America, and also can be seen at a few South Eastern Time Attacks. And that car is very well mannered and Predictable.

I am gonna build the car to be rounded, drag, street and maybe take on a circuit well. Once the power parts are all together then I can focus on the suspension, wheels, brakes. We'll see how it turns out. My spare room looking like a warehouse now.

Where category do you classify the Evo? Sedan.

I don't think neither the GTR nor the Supra were considered sports cars. Mayb the MR2 but these cars are considered GT or Grand Tourers.....Softer suspension...more weight, engine performance enough to keep up with Sport cars, but sportcars have edge on handling, 2 door coupes with either 2 seat or 2+2 seating.
Sport cars are only 2 Seaters.
S2000, MR2, Mazda Miata, BMW Z3/Z4, Nissan 350Z.
GT
Skyline, Supra, Soara, RX7 (esp 4 seater), GTO/3000GT, 300ZX to name a few

On that note Supra's rock, no doubt. They eat most other cars for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
