So I've made the venture down to bikes and acquired a 2004 trx450R.

I always considered getting a quad, but accidentally ended up with this one when doing research for a friend. Initially I didn't realize the overall potential for the platform but as I began digging in an researching I became more hooked.

So this example, when picked up from auction was in real piss poor state

The overall plan is to build an mx capable quad that looks and performs pretty good. While being able to quickly switch over to flat track/supermoto style

Alba racing Nerf bars
Streamline racing steel braided brake lines
2006+ Plastics, gas tank, headlight and tail light conversion
New clutch and throttle cables
American star steering ends
CV products coolant hose
Primary drive chain and sprockets

Soon to be installed

Teardown
So straight from the auction the engine wouldn't spin over. So with the help of pat, the teardown process began
Image

He began to strip and inventory what's broken and what's reusable.

Image

The auction description noted that the bike was flood damaged. We gave it a quick power wash before starting to strip and paint the rust spots.

Image

We quickly realized the front shocks were shot, the front braking system was shot, the Nerf bars were broken, lots of bolts had been stripped or broken off.

Our new tires also arrived that day along with a few other goodies

By the next morning the new motor arrived
Image

The frame was then cleaned up and painted in High temp black. I think I may revisit this later and redo in Por15 and attempt to powdercoat it.

Time for a bit more upgrades
Image

The sight glass on the stator cover was broken so I ordered in a new one. The headlights had gone out again and was getting a very low power reading through the wiring. The new cover came with a stator and decided to install it as is. Took the opportunity to perform a full service, some suspension adjustments and change out the tie rod end (One got bent during a small accident). I took out a few turns of preload on the front shocks as I Found them to be a bit too stiff and bumpy and had minimal travel. The preload definitely helped. The whole front and rear braking system was replaced as I couldn't dial out a vague feeling front lever, which no matter how much we bled the system, the lever kept going flat.

Image

We moved on to the chain and sprockets which showed significant signs of wear.

New headlight brackets and headlights installed

Moved on to the rear of the bike and had a hell of a time there. The axle nuts and bearing assembly were difficult to remove and the axle bearing surface had a bit of rust. That now means....new axle, new carrier bearing....added to cart. As a temporary measure I cleaned up the surface with sandpaper, then regreased it

Took the opportunity to replace the rear caliper bracket bushing

Next steps include -
Jetting the Carb
Installing new ASV levers
Replacing throttle cable
Replacing Seat
FCR Carb conversion
Rebuild original motor to 520 Stroker

Yes have made some notable changes since the last update

We rebuilt the carb with dynojet jets but those turned out to be useless.
Currently rebuilding a crf250 carb to use for the fcr carb conversion.

Installed new clutches and have now started testing some new oils.
