Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vince Henderson speaks at a press conference on Thursday as ALBA Coordinator, Philbert Aaron (left) looks on
By EDONA JNO BAPTISTE, Dominica News Staff 27.NOV.08
A press conference was held this afternoon to clarify issues on a recently held summit for ALBA members with the intent of establishing a single currency amongst them.

Cuban state media reported earlier today that Venezuela, Bolivia, Honduras, Nicaragua, Ecuador, Cuba and Dominica signed a final Declaration on Wednesday that gives a green light for the establishment of a single currency called the Sucre, that will initially circulate virtually.

But Foreign Affairs Minister, Vince Henderson said that no document has been signed as yet.

He said a technical committee was appointed to review the proposals made for the Declaration which has not been implemented.

Cuban State media further stated that the final Declaration of the III Extraordinary Summit of the Bolivarian Alternative for the People of Our America, better known by its Spanish acronym ALBA, that Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez pioneered to replace the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) was approved today in Caracas.
The Declaration approves the creation of a single monetary zone and "a chamber of compensation payments."

The creation of the monetary bloc would be accompanied by a Reserve Fund financed by contributions from member countries "to sustain investment policies for development," according to a draft document read by Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez

I don't even know why they are thinking about this new currency. Its only going to be used by a few countries with small markwts, which decreases its chance of value. Its also going to hurt the other Caribbean island who use the EC Dollar.

When we had the chance to get onto another currency, the Euro, we didn't so why now? What a dumb move. The US is going to do its best to devalue this currency. We are in trouble.

I can't imagine that this will actually happen!! This would be beyond stupidity and surely would only be done to pad the bank accounts of those in power to the detriment of the country!!!

Surely the populace will take a stand against such a move. Organized rallies with enough support should be able to prevent this from happening as this goes beyond the mandate given to the government.... [:.] [thumbsdown]

Come on man.. you heard what u just said.. be realistic... How can you ever compare Dominica to Haiti..be it 5 or 15 years down the line.. Let me say something.. firstly.. this type of comments is what destroys the country's name and spirit of the people living on Island who is trying to make a difference. Some people are out there doing what it takes to move forward.. while some people sit back and contribute nothing but negativity.

Your Tongue is a weapon. Point Blank. The things you say have a way of manifesting itself. I am not trying to say your not entitled to your opinion.. I am just saying.. think about what your saying.. and be careful with your words.

I just read the a summary of the the proposal on another site and to be honest it does sound interesting, but thats if it works. I honestly don't think it will completely work. It may happen, but I don't think its the right move for us. We stand to lose too much. I think the PM should take a step back from this and think of what the end results will be. We have a fragile cruise tourism industry, which we stand to lose. Also, it could be harder for D/cans to obtain visas to travel to the US. We could lose long standing US investment in D/ca. The heads should really thing about this venture alot more.

We could end up like St Kitts which PETA is rallying heavily against because of Ross University, School of medicine
