so someone tell me, what is the signifant advantage of vtec as opposed to other similar manufacturer types? Damien?

Not all the manufacturers systems work the same

Toyota...VVT is only valve timing...VVTi is valve timing with inteligence...VVTL-i includes lift

Nissan QVTC - valve timing
NISSAN NEO VVL - valve lift and timing

Suzuki vvt etc

There was a thread on vtec and i-vtec..i bet you skipped it

But vtec basically provides switches over cam lobes to have a difference in lift.
The main advantage of this is:
Drive ability, Fuel economy etc while having A lot of performance in the upper RPMS. the Second cam lobe is far more agressive than the first which is what helps the engine breath and high RPMS and produce the power...thats why on Some setups you can feel a small but noticeable difference between on and off vtec.

ahhhh ok. i didnt skip the vtec and i-vtec thread. i just didnt read it thoroughly and let it sink in. what i wanna hear next is, is vtec the best type of valve and lift enhancement? or its just overhyped? ya know? is it worth its praise or is it just one of the oldest so its more recognised?

VTEC or go home lol

Honda has done more for motorsports/imports in less time than any other manufacturer. Every tuner or race fanatic had his hand in a honda either as owner/tuner/or driver... That's why you hear all of them 4g63/SR20/EJ25/1JZ/ owners want to rev to or past 8000rpm cause guess what? 85% of them owned a Honda
