i seen other reviews on the test drive of the 2j supra and in all i seen they always diss the throttle response and claim the turbine runs out of puff. i dunno they always sound like they trying to smash it and at the end of the review i just checking like they saying the supra aint good for anything. but i guess thats to get you interested in ebay so you can start buying parts.

The only reason we love it so much is for it's POTENTIAL. cus come on...for a sports car...it's heavy, unresponsive, the suspension too soft for a pure sports car but the interior not upscale enough for a luxo-sports car. But put 5 grand in the engine and...

Supra RZ: 1510kg

Base Model GTR: 1540kg
GTR Vspec/Vspec II: 1560kg
GTR Vspec/Vspec II N1: 1550kg

I don't think neither the GTR nor the Supra were considered sports cars. Mayb the MR2 but these cars are considered GT or Grand Tourers.....Softer suspension...more weight, engine performance enough to keep up with Sport cars, but sportcars have edge on handling, 2 door coupes with either 2 seat or 2+2 seating.

Sport cars are only 2 Seaters.
S2000, MR2, Mazda Miata, BMW Z3/Z4, Nissan 350Z.

GT
Skyline, Supra, Soara, RX7 (esp 4 seater), GTO/3000GT, 300ZX to name a few

autospeed.com.au wrote: Perhaps the fact that the car that we pedalled had been mildly modified had something to do with it (it was equipped with a big exhaust, boost controller set to 1.3 Bar and new intake filters) but we've never sat behind a twin turbo engine that's this good. In comparison, the GT-R's six cylinder is a sweet revving but torqueless contraption. The twin turbo Subaru engine? A laughable design with an enormous mid-range torque hole. Even the close relative Toyota 1JZ-GTE found under the nose of the Soarer? Gutless and peaky! For the sequential twin-turbo 2JZ-GTE 3-litre is a massive producer of torque throughout the rev range, from literally a few hundred rpm above idle right though to the 6800 redline.

OK, so the engine's pretty damn good. But what about the rest of the car? Well, it could hardly be anything other than a relative disappointment after that engine... That's not to say that the brakes and suspension and body are poor - but they don't have the shattering impact that comes from being simply the best around. Front discs are ventilated 322mm and are gripped by twin pot calipers while at the back you'll find solids with single potters. The ABS incorporates a G-sensor into its design, but on paper the braking specs are nothing special.

On the 97+ Supras, Throttle response (via the ETCS-i electronic throttle) is immediate and comes backed with a progressive snowball of torque. And, no matter what revs you've got the thing lumbering at, there's never a time when you have to row down through the ratios to find accelerative urgency - certainly a rare enjoyment in a turbo car.

Craig Dean - has driven a Supra to outright third place in the very tough Targa Tasmania road race. The suspension mods of the Targa car? Just the addition of HKS springs!

Quite a bit more avail on autospeed

So the 97+ supras were better at it. But tell me, how many other grand tourers were there for that price range? Seems to me that that class in its true sense didnt appeal to most people spendin that amount of money. When you look at Jags, Aston martin, THOSE I would call real grand tourers. I could look for other GTs (non-japanese) for the same price, but I lazy

Damien...the thing was..the JAGS and THE ASTONs were way above the Supra price range, and offered 1/200th the reliability. The supra could and Did hang with quite a few of those cars.

The skyline GTR's price still surpasses that of the Supra. the luxury isn't what defines the class....a GT car, like a Sports car can be made with Luxury Mclaren SLR is a great example of it....or BARE minimums Supra is a good example

You right on the reliability part [dwl]

But even so I don't think the global (especially US) markets looked at the supra in that light. As far as I know it really became popular when the tuner scene blew up in the late 90's, after the car was discontinued, and primaily because of the engine. Kind of like middle age artists whose paintings became expensive only after they died (sucks either way).

But anyway we strayin. What happening with JZA80 to date?

I don't know about all what you guys saying there. But personally the Toyota Supra is a piece of work. The 97 upward supra with VVti are not favored by tuners here. Despite the nice feel they have stock it isn't exactly sort after in the highly modified cars. Hence the reason I went with a non vvti engine, infact the vvti engine is cheaper than the non-vvti. Like I said those us tuners think its crap but I like to experiment with something for myself in order to make that judgement, so maybe I may put a vvti one in another project I have coming up.
Also swapping in the vvti engine with electronic throttle is also a bitch since the cars didn't come with throttle cables, so you'd have to swap out throtttle bodies.

Another note the vvti engine got some flack because guys had difficulty tunning the car.

Now as to the supra it is just a waiting game now the engine is supposed to be here today. It will be getting a complete service. And prep work

New Intake manifold Gaskets
New Crank Seals
New Cam Seal
New Timing Belt, tensioner and Idler bearing
New Water Pump
New Plugs
Underdrive Pulleys

Removal of the stock twins to make room for the new single turbo set up.

I may keep the stock twins on to get the car to start to do preliminary testing. By next week she will have her Single turbo.
